Transport your learners to the little known and rarely studied mesophotic reefs in South Australia's Marine Parks within the Great Southern Reef.
Using new video footage taken during scientific surveys, be the first to experience the amazing life that lives in the twilight zone.
Connected to the 2024 National Science Weeks school theme Species Survival - More than just sustainability, learn and understand what it takes to live and survive in these waters, and how marine parks play a role in protecting these environments.
Nestled in the twilight zone of the ocean, mesophotic reefs present a mysterious and less explored area between the well-lit shallow waters and the dark abysses. These unique ecosystems, found at depths of 30 to 150 metres, are treasure troves of biodiversity, hosting an array of life forms adapted to low-light conditions.
This new resource and video are designed for Year 6 science students in South Australia, focusing particularly on the temperate reefs along the Great Southern Reef and within South Australia's marine parks.
However, the video and resource can be adapted for other year levels interested in this topic.
