Sustainability Trail Activity

In 2024, Siena College will be hosting a sustainability trail on campus to celebrate National Science Week. The school's theme for National Science Week is Species Survival - More than just sustainability.

The sustainability trail will involve a scavenger hunt for endangered species in digital habitats around campus using augmented reality (AR) technology. Senior environmental science students have prepared materials about the endangered species that will be found in this trail. Once guests have completed the trail and collected the information in their field guide, they will be able to complete a badge-making conservation activity.

Students will learn about sustainability from an ecology perspective, with a focus on endangered species. In terms of STEM skills, they will identify problems these species face and think about innovative ways to tackle these issues. They will engage in experiential learning through practical activities that involve both numeracy and creativity, as well as using technologies such as AR to make the trail more immersive. They will reflect on their learning as the conclusion of the trail.

By showcasing aspects of our environmental science curriculum and sustainability, students will have a hands-on experience of STEM. Students who may not perceive themselves as being STEM students will have the chance to immerse themselves with a low barrier to entry and possibly re-evaluate what STEM might be for them. Local primary school students will have access to an exciting and innovative STEM program and be inspired to pursue STEM pathways.
