St Francis of Assisi College (SFoAC) is excited to be celebrating National Science Week 2024 with St Joseph’s School Renmark (SJSR). SFoAC wants to ignite the curiosity and creativity of our high school students and SJSR primary school students, with a variety of fun and hands-on science experiments.
SFoAC Year 8 students and SJSR Year 3 students will work together to conduct experiments. Such as ‘bottle rockets’ and ‘storm in a glass’. Making predictions of what will happen then evaluating outcomes.
The skills that students will use include communication skills (discussing how to conduct experiments and sharing feedback during evaluation), critical thinking and problem solving (ingredients required, how to overcome and work through challenges) and logical thinking skills (examining experiment stations, making reasonable judgments or decisions). Year 8 students will learn leadership skills, as they research, plan and set up experiments and work with Year 3 students.
Students will rotate through stations throughout the morning in our College’s three new science labs. Holding this activity at SFoAC will provide SJSR students with an opportunity to explore science labs and equipment (such as our Van de Graaff) in a high school setting, to spark interest in STEM subjects in high school.
By setting up stations on a rotation system and dividing up the group of students into smaller groups (made up of both high school and primary school students), all students participating will have the opportunity to engage in all of the experiments.
